I'd never take those away! Pretty sure the only reason anyone got rid of them was because each character was space and $$ for newspapers. So, one less comma was cheaper.
I have gotten in so many arguments about that darned space. People who remember nothing else from their schooldays are like "I WILL HOLD THE DOUBLE SPACE SACRED FOREVER BECAUSE MRS. JOHNSON SAID SO IN SEVENTH GRADE." Arrgh.
